Cryptocurrency Mining Limited In Canada
Generally, Quebec isn’t much enthusiastic about crypto-mining, unlike Russia’s Crimea, Venezuela and Iran, which are increasingly pinning their hopes on the crypto-economy to help them fight US-initiated sanctions.
Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said at a conference in Montreal Friday, that they are not much interested in people, who want to come and settle in Canada and do Bitcoin mining. He also added, that industries drawing Quebec’s interest need to add value to Canadian society, and he sees no gain in having servers there to “do transaction mining and acquire new bitcoins.”
He said, they are more open to those companies, who are dealing with technological transformation based around blockchain or the distributed ledger technology in other words.
His position seems to be different from the stance of Crimean authorities, as well as those of Iran and Venezuela. Crimea, which has recently been under the US’ financial blockade, announced last week about his plans to set up a so-called “CryptoCrimea” platform and enforce the ties with China to introduce blockchain technology and digital money into the region’s economy.
In the past, Iran and Venezuela, which were both under US sanctions, announced about their plans to pass to blockchain-based finances. Recently, Venezuela officially launched the petro to support Caracas fighting against financial blockade set on the country.
