HACKER WHO ATTACKED THE ETHEREUM CLASSIC NETWORK RETURNED 100 THOUSAND DOLLARS TO THE CRYPTO-EXCHANGE
On January 12th, a message appeared in the official blog of the Gate.io exchange stating that the hacker responsible for the 51% attack on the Ethereum Classic network returned $ 100,000 of stolen funds.
As noted in the company, the attacker tried to contact, but never received an answer to the question why he decided to return the stolen money.
If he did it not for profit, it can be attributed to white hackers who simply point people to problems in the blockchain consensus.
Recall, on January 9th Gate.io submitted a report on the hack, based on which the exchange lost 54 200 ETC (at the time of the hack, the equivalent of 271 500 dollars). According to Coinbase, the amount lost in the deep reorganization of the chain reaches $1.1 million.
Representatives of Gate.io drew attention to the still small hashrate of the Ethereum Classic network. Attackers can take advantage of this situation by renting large amounts of hashrate and staging another 51% attack. The exchange has also introduced preventive measures and increased the number of confirmations for deposit to the ETC stock exchange up to 4000.
